Victoria Inn

Overview

The Victoria Inn was open from at least 1851 until it was closed in 1988. The first landlord I can find any record of is Absalom Grey (b. circa 1795, Glastonbury), who had previously been the licensee of the Ship Inn at Kilver Street, Shepton Mallet (this is where we find him in the 1841 census). He went bankrupt in 1848, at which time he has been living in Paulton for 6 weeks. By 1851 he is registered in the census as being a Beer Seller in Newtown, living with his wife Mercy (Hiscox), a servant (Ruth Carter age 17) and three lodgers. He is still there in 1861, where he is listed as a Licensed Lodging House Keeper and Beer Seller.

Absalom died in 1864, and the license passes to his son Abraham Hiscox Grey.
