Paulton Licenses

A full licence for the Somerset Inn, Paulton, granted by the Temple Cloud magistrates, was confirmed by the Somerset Confirming and Compensation Committee, at Wells on Friday.

At present the inn has a beer licence only, and the licensee Mr. James Macey, told the Committee that alterations costing £2,000 were carried out last year. People in the vicinity now had to walk a mile to obtain spirits.

A petition bearing over 300 signatures was presented in support of the application.

The granting of the licence was confirmed, on payment of additional monopoly value of £325 to be paid on taking out first licence.

The Committee also confirmed the granting of a wine licence to Mr. Joseph William Barras, of The Rising Sun, Newtown, Paulton.

Mr. Barras said that the premises were modernised a few years ago. A petition bearing over 311 signatures was handed in in support.

He said that a large number of his customers were women and he was repeatedly asked for wines. The inn was situated in a busy area.

There was no opposition to the applications.
